Prasannata Shandilya, a Class VI student of O.P.Jindal School from the village Nisha, Angul, will be handed over the National Bravery Award. The little brave heart had shown great courage, which led to the arrest of dacoits in April last year. Prasannata had displayed strong presence of mind when dacoits had entered their house and attacked her parents. “The dacoits hit us and demanded to be given all the valuables in the house. We were worried about Prasannata since she was alone in her room,” said mother Mrs. Kalpana Shandilya. But the 10-year-old showed immense courage. She came up with an instant plan of action. “I was in my room which is close to the kitchen. I could see that the dacoits were hurting my parents. So I tip-toed into the kitchen, prepared a mix of turmeric and chilli powder in a big utensil, climbed the bed of the room where the dacoits were present and threw it into their eyes,” said Prasannata, who was in New Delhi for Indian Council for Child Welfare for a felicitation ceremony. By the time the dacoits could recover, Prasannata had called the police. The proud parents of the little girl said that they were surprised by their daughter actions. “She has always been a smart kid. We were amazed by her courage and are proud of her,” said Prasannata’s father. Prasannata, along with 26 other children from the country, will receive the award from Hon'ble Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on the Republic Day. The National Bravery Award Scheme is an endeavour by the Indian Council for Child Welfare to give due recognition to the children who show exceptional courage and perform meritorious service to inspire others to emulate their example. Children will get a medal, certificate and cash under the scheme and the awardees will be granted financial assistance until they complete their schooling.
