                                                                    FOREWORD

               Angul, a district of glory and hope, occupies the centre stage of Orissa. It was carved out as a separate district in the redrawn map of Orissa in 1993. The official gazetteer of Dhenkanal district of which Angul formed a part was published in 1972. Mr. L.E.B. Cobden Ramsay had written a gazetteer for 24 ex-Feudatory States in 1909. Mr. L.S.S.O' Malley wrote in 1908 a full scale gazetteer  of old Angul district, which contained Angul and Khondamals sub-divisions of present Angul and Khondamals districts respectively. The edifice of the present work is built on the skeleton of these works, other published and non-published references, official records and contributions made by numerous individuals. This is the first gazetteer of the modern Angul district.

                The CD Rom version of the gazetteer is the first of its kind. A lot of efforts have gone into the preparation of this gazetteer. It will serve as a very useful reference document for administrators, policy makers, social scientists, research scholars, trade & industry.

                  I  congratulate Mr. N.B.Dhal, IAS the present Collector and District Magistrate, Angul who has conceptualized this publication and all the contributors who have brought life into different subjects, thereby filling a significant void in the gazetteer literature.
