      Angul district has a long historical back ground in sports and games. Mr.Smith, the Dy.Commissioner of Angul during 1933 took initiatives to popularise football in the rural areas.

 

          The District Athletic Association of erstwhile Dhenkanal district & the sub divisional Athletic Association conducted  various tournaments at the district level & helped development of sports & games in rural areas of the district.

           

          After creation of the new district  Angul District Athletic Association was formed in 1994 to popularize and organize different sports activities in the district. Sub-Divisional Athletic Associations of   Angul, Talcher, Athamallik and  Pallahara sub  divisions  and institutions like  Police Training College ( PTC), Forest Rangers’ College, NALCO,MCL, NTPC, FCI, & CISF are the institutional members of this Association. Different sports activities like athletics, football, volleyball, kabaddi  tournaments are regularly conducted for different age groups and selected teams are sent to participate in different State level tournaments.

          The sub divisional stadium at Athamallik will be developed shortly over Ac 4.18 dec. of land. There is also a proposal for construction of a table tennis academy and indoor hall at Angul with support of the PSUs & Govt. of India.

 

          Besides,  a number of stadia &  indoor halls are also available  in NALCO, NTPC & MCL areas .  Sports & Youth Service Department of Govt. of Orissa has  already developed 8 play grounds of different High Schools.

 

          In rural areas local & traditional sports possess more appeal. The traditional popular games in rural areas includes Kaudi Khela, Pua badi, Rama Laxman & Sita, Puchi, Ludu, Rumal Chori, Chori, Chor Police, Badi Khela & Kabadi.

 

Body Building Association
 

          The Angul Body Building Association was formed in the year 1997. The objective of this association is to encourage local youths/ sports lover for development of health and create awareness among the public for body building. This association was affiliated by Orissa Amateur Body Building Association , this sports/ games has been recognized by World Olympic Committee as well as the Indian Olympic Association, regularly boys are trained up and participate in the State level and National level championship from this association.

 

          This association has conducted the State level competition at Angul. Shri Golak Patanaik, Secretary of this association come out as an Asian Judge by the Asian Body Building Federation, Singapore. He participated in the 1st Common Wealth Body Building championship at Mallaka, Malaysia as observer.
